The Site

About Camera Roll

Camera Roll is a film and television review site featuring commentary and criticism by Ho Lin. It covers the full range of cinematic experience — new theatrical releases, world cinema, classic films, repertory discoveries, and television — with the same seriousness and curiosity that serious filmgoing demands.

The site is built on the conviction that movies and television, at their best, are among the most powerful art forms we have — capable of beauty, provocation, emotional complexity, and genuine surprise. Camera Roll takes that potential seriously, without ever losing sight of the fact that film is also supposed to be fun.

Writing & Criticism

My Involvement

I have been writing content and reviews for Camera Roll for over two decades. Over that time the site has accumulated more than thirty pages of criticism spanning hundreds of films and series, from Hollywood blockbusters to obscure international releases, from golden-age classics to the latest streaming originals.

The writing has always aimed to be readable and considered in equal measure — opinionated without being dismissive, enthusiastic without being uncritical. If a film is worth seeing, the review should tell you why. If it isn't, that should be honest too, and ideally entertaining in the saying of it.

Categories

What We Cover

The site is organized into several overlapping areas, each reflecting a different angle on film and television culture. New releases get covered as they open; older work gets its due in repertory and classics sections; and the Musings column handles the more essayistic pieces — retrospectives, appreciations, and the occasional provocation.
